What Is It?
The Inviting School Survey-Revised (ISS-R) is an easy to complete inventory designed to measure the degree to which schools are welcoming in five basic areas: People, Places, Policies, Programs and Processes.
Why Should We Use the ISS-R?
The ISS-R is a valuable tool offering research-based evidence that the school is a truly inviting environment. The ISS-R results provide base-line data that allows a school to compare itself with other schools of similar make-up around the world.
In addition to helping assess the “Invitational Quality” (I.Q.) of schools, the ISS-R will also assist school personnel to:
- Identify schools that are eligible to receive the Inviting School Award.
- Recognize areas in which the school is doing well and what it might want to do better.
- Use as an assessment tool to see how administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents, and the community perceive the school.
- Use as a pre-post measure by educators who are implementing a plan to improve their total school environment and culture.
How Is The ISS-R Administered And Scored?
The ISS-R (© 2008) is designed for electronic, self-administration through the IAIE website. Members of a school or participants in a research study take the ISS-R individually and their results are compiled for their assigned school or group. Most respondents complete the survey within 20 minutes or less.
Scores for schools or other groups are compiled in spreadsheets. Inviting School Applicants will receive a detailed report for each participating school. Researchers and other customers may request reports for an additional charge.
What Is The Cost?
If your school has applied for the Inviting School Award, there is a minimal charge to recover technical costs. The ISS-R results will assist you in the application process. For Inviting School Award applicants, scoring and analysis of the ISS-R results is FREE.
Complete the Schools Demographics Form
If you are planning to purchase and administer the ISS-R online, please complete the Schools Demographics Form [link] and send a completed copy via email to Dr. Ken Smith (ken.smith@acu.edu.au). Proceed to the appropriate instructions below to purchase your ISS-R administrations.
Inviting School Award Applicants
If your school will be an Inviting School Award Applicant for 2010, you may use this link to purchase and access the computer version of ISS-Revised (© 2008).
There is a nominal charge for all other schools and researchers requesting to use the ISS-R. Current prices for administrations, scoring, and analysis are posted here.
IAIE Members
If you are a member of IAIE and want to use the ISS-Revised (© 2008) for your school or for research, you may use this link to purchase and access the computer version. A second link will allow you to pay for data analysis and a report.
