Students Questioning Students

Several years ago, a longtime member of the Alliance, Judith Engel, developed an innovative teaching approach called Students Questioning Students (SQS). The basic premise of her program includes many of the assumptions found in Invitational Education® . Judy taught mathematics at theBronx High School of Science in New York. An exceptional teacher, Judy has shared two video clips about SQS.

The first video is a three-minute segment, teaching children to think, in the INSIDE YOUR SCHOOLS series of half-hour videos, produced by the American Federation of Teachers, Washington, DC, in 1985. The late Steve Allen hosted the series, which was seen on national TV. SQS was taped in a second year mathematics course at the Bronx High School of Science. Most of the students were ninth graders.

The second segment is also about three minutes of a 40-minute production. It was produced by the Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, DC in June 1989. SQS was taped in a second-year mathematics class near the end of the school year.  The purpose of the video was to show at conferences the use of language in teaching mathematics and science.
